"I am a Professor in Language, Literacy, and Culture in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum at the University of Washington where I teach, advise, mentor and conduct research around supporting multilingual students especially through teacher development and teacher education. I am also currently the President of the American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL), a Board member of the Center of Applied Linguistics (CAL) and an Advisory Board member of the MultiLx research project.  I have received the AERA Division K Dissertation Award in 2000, the AERA Second Language SIG Leadership through Research Award in 2025, and the Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award in 2020. My motivation with the project is to advocate and push for more asset-based dual language education for families of the global majority, especially Latinx families, and also to support and mentor students to do the work. A large part of my work for the past 25 years has been in bilingual and multilingual teacher development."
